A Quick and Simple Decluttering and Organization Project

Greetings from cold and snowy Michigan! We got about 4-5 inches of snow last night and are preparing for record-breaking frigid temperatures in the coming days. It would be a great time to work on decluttering and organizing my home, but I have to work at my other job.

I decided yesterday that I wanted to go through all our towels. It seems like we always have a ton of dirty towels laying around, I know we aren’t the only ones! My oldest child, Abby, uses what seems like 4 towels every time she takes a shower and she uses clean towels every time too! I’m old school, I use two towels when I shower and use those same towels for a couple of showers. That’s what we did growing up and I’ve just continued to do that. My kids feel it’s necessary to use clean towels every time they shower and then leave them on their bathroom floor. I don’t know when we started raising pigs, but their bathroom looks like barn animals live in it!

Before & After

In the past, I have tried many ways to get my girls from using too many towels. Telling them not to, yelling at them, and finally, making them wash towels every week. None of these ways have worked. The before picture above is the way Abby folds and puts towels up! Just imagine this rack full of towels folded like the ones above! I have learned to ignore this because I just don’t have the time or motivation to tackle these things every day. Yes, I am a bad Mom. Things like this are part of my inspiration to go through our house to declutter and organize it. Yesterday, while I was at work, I had my husband wash all of our towels and leave them in baskets in our living room. This way, I will have to go through them, no procrastinating for me today! I put all the towels on our couch and this is what I had.

I sorted all our towels into 3 groups: Keep, Donate, and Rags. I have household rags and my painting rags, so I always need new ones. For some reason, folding towels is very difficult for the members of my family. None of them fold them correctly! I still fold my towels the way I learned when I was in the Air Force decades ago. You fold them in half, then in half again and then in thirds so they look like a small letter e. It isn’t that hard and I’ve shown my daughters this time and time again, but they still don’t do it. I’m going to try something a little crazy for me, rolling our towels up. How hard can that be, everyone should be able to fold towels in half and then roll, right? I’ll let you know.

I am very surprised how little time this took, about half an hour to sort and fold all our towels. I ended up with 2 1/2 kitchen garbage bags to donate, a laundry basket full of towels to be used as rags and the rest filled up our towel rack in our downstairs bathroom.

Towels after.

I don’t think I like rolling my towels, maybe it’s because it’s a new thing for me. Maybe it’s because of the towel rack we have, they don’t fit very well. When they are rolled up, they are the perfect length to roll right out of the sides. Mine certainly doesn’t look like the gorgeous towels I’ve seen on Pinterest! I guess we need either a new towel rack or baskets to put the towels in. I don’t want either of the above, but I will give this way a try and see how it works for us. I will be going to the dollar store and getting a couple of plastic bins for our hand towels and washcloths. I will be cleaning my bathroom floor Tuesday when I actually clean the whole bathroom. We have had this towel rack ever since we lived here, about 15 years and it is time to refresh it up a bit. That will be a project when I get my basement organized more or when Spring arrives. A good cleaning and a can of spray paint will bring it back to life, but that is for another day.

I’m pretty happy that I finally have all our towels gone through and mostly organized(need a basket or bin for the smaller towels/washcloths). I have been very good about not keeping tons of things in our bathroom and I’m happy with how things are organized so I think I’m done with this room.

It sure doesn’t seem like I’ve gone through much in our house, but I’ve gotten rid of plenty of stuff. We will be getting rid of more sometime this week when my husband takes a load of large stuff to the landfill. It will be nice to get rid of the bigger stuff that is currently in our basement taking up room.
